Sony continues to live up to it's ambitious roadmap for AIT technology. Sony has once again doubled the capacity of the AIT tape drive, now offering 400gb of native capacity in a compact 8mm disc. The AIT-5 drive is already available to distributors of Sony product.
AIT Technology features a "One-pass" recording nature, while other drives take up to 50 passes to completely fill a tape.
AIT-5 technology is unique in the capability of the device in comparison to its form-factor. The drive is made available in a compact 3.5". The media itself is merely 8mm. Most drives of this storage capacity including SDLT and LTO technologies feature media that is 1/2 inch and Linear, rather than the simpler Helical-Scan. AIT-5 features a compression rate of 2.6:1. That makes the drive capable of a total of 1.04 Terabytes (1,040gb). AIT-5 is also capable of executing the Write-Once-Read-Many (WORM) technology to ensure even greater data protection. Another highlight is the Memory-in-Casette (MIC) and advanced read/write heads, which enable the drive to utilize fast data search and high perfomance to find, read, and write data quickly and seamlessly. Sony has also protected previous investors in the AIT family by making AIT-5 drives backwards compatible with AIT-3, AIT-4, and AIT-3E.
Sony's AIT is also extremely reliable in comparison to corresponding technologies. Due to the "one-pass" recording method the tapes inherently get much less wear. Other features that enhance its reliability are AIT's gentle tape motion, low tension, and the outstanding durability of the Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) media. For AIT-5 drives this means a Mean-Time-Between-Failure (MTBF) of an amazing 400,000 hours at a 100% duty cycle. The media itself is capable of an average of up to 30,000 passes before replacement and has an archival life of 30 years.
According to Sony the AIT technology is yet to reach its full potential and will only continue to improve. AIT-6 is predicted to be able to hold 800gb natively. You can be a part of the exciting release of this new product. Upgrade to AIT-5 today.
In addition to AIT-5 we offer the new Sony Blu-ray technology and the other trusted methods of data storage, including UDO, MO, and Tape.
